My Obsession with MST3K

From the very first time I accidently happened across an episode of Joel and the Bots on Comedy Central to the times my best friend and I have quoted MST3K: The Movie word for word, and all points in between I have had very fond memories of the show. I am what most sane people call a true fan. I have almost every episode, including many Rhino videos and DVDs. I also have two old calenders, twelve packs of MST3K inspired Post-It Notes, a really cool shirt, six magnets, Clowns in the Sky I and II and The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Amazing Colossal Episode Guide. I had a static decal on the back of my car until it blew away on the way to work one day. I also collect quotes from the series and the feature film that came out in 1996. At the moment I have a grand total of 980 quotes, and I collect more almost every day. 296 of these quotes are from MST3K: The Movie. It's one of the best movies ever! So, you see, I really am an obsessive fan.

Scooby says he's a fan, too!

Good-bye Joel, hello Mike!

The petition to bring a special edition Mystery Science Theater: The Movie to DVD is now up to 493 signatures. Isn't that incredible? You'd think that by now some bigwig executive would listen to the fans and re-release the movie. Let's keep the petiton going, folks, until they finally come to their senses--the "collective heads of knuckle!"

Well, folks I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that the giveaway MST3K DVD set was lost in the mail so, I won't be able to host a giveaway. I really hate that, I was looking forward to writing a quiz and having someone win. Of course, there'a always a small chance it might still get here but there's no point in holding our collective breaths.
As for good news, I am now the happy owner of the Movie (yeah, THAT movie) on DVD. My husband managed to win one off EBay for me as a Christmas gift. Isn't he the best! In other good news, the online petition to bring the Movie back in circulation on DVD now has 366 signatures. There's plenty of demand for a re-release so let's hope that one day the company that owns the rights to it will be nice enough do so.

A few days ago, I recieved an email on behalf of Rhino Entertainment asking me to host a giveaway of their newest MST3K boxed set! Mystery Science Theater Volume Six includes fan favorites Attack of the Giant Leeches, Teenagers From Outer Space, Mr. B Natural, and Gunslinger. Now being this is a giveaway set I'm going to think of a fun way for someone to win the set. Right now, I'm leaning towards putting a quiz on here and having people email me the answers. I haven't made my mind up yet but you can be sure it'll be MST related. Keep watching this site for updates.

Good news! The Give Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie Special Edition A Chance Petition is now up to 148 signatures. That's awesome! Six of them are from people I know. Matt and I signed it, of course. My sister Rachel and my best friend Rachel signed it. Now Ian and Michelle have signed it. Thanks guys! You are alright! C'mon folks, let's keep adding those names.

Bad news! I just read on Satellite News that there is no further plans to televise MST3Ks after the end of the contract between Best Brains and The Sci-Fi channel. This means that January 31, 2004 may be the last time we see an episode on the television. Maybe some other network will pick it up. Considering some of the junk that's been riding syndication for years, I have hope that MST will not leave the air forever.

Other news! I fixed the links so now they open in a new window. Yep, just when you thought this humble little site couldn't get any better, I go and change things on you.

Who's Who on the Satellite

Joel Hodgson, the main mastermind behind the show and host from 1988 through 1993.
Josh Weinstein aka J. Elvis Weinstein, Dr. F's first assistent, early voice of Servo.
Trace Beaulieu, Dr. Forrester (Dr. F), the head Mad responsible for Joel and Mike being shot into space. Played Crow from 1988 through 1996. Sender of cheesy movies, la la la.
Mike Nelson, host from 1993-1999, headwriter starting from the second season, and just all-around good guy.
Kevin Murphy, Tom Servo from seasons 2 through , the voice of Cambot for the one and only time he ever spoke. Also sweated inside that hot, heavy and hairy Professor Bobo costume.
Frank Conniff, TV's Frank from 1990-1995. "Push the button, Frank!"
Mary Jo Pehl, played Pearl Forrester, Dr. F's mom. Chased Mike, Servo and Crow through time and space in a VW Minibus look-alike during seasons 8-10. Also a writer for the series.
Bill Corbett, writer for the series, Crow from 1996-1999. Played the main Observor, affectionately called Brain Guy, during the last few seasons.
Patrick Brantseg, voice of Gypsy, and Art Director for the show. What a guy!

More Cast and Crew

Jim Mallon, production manager at KTMA where MST3K had its beginnings, and Executive Producer of the entire series. Works for Best Brains, Incorporated which is MST3K's personal company.
Paul Chaplin, One of the many talented writers for the series.
Bridget Jones, another lovely member of the writing staff. Married to the equally lovely Mike Nelson.
Tim Johnson, the controller at Best Brains.
Barb Tebben, also works for BBI, and is the Info Club Poobah. What a wonderful person! Nice too, she sent a very sweet reply to one of my emails.

Some Background Info On The Best Show Ever

In 1988 a group of very talented men got together and started producing Mystery Science Theater 3000 for KTMA, a local television station in Minneapolis, MN. Those early shows looked a bit different from the ones we got used to seeing on Comedy Central and Sci*Fi later. In these the Sattelite of Love looked like circular wires instead of a doggy bone, and Servo was grey. Dr. Forrester was still an evil scientist, but he hadn't yet been struck by lightening. The show soon became a cult hit with an impressive 10 year run, and even a feature film that was produced in 1996. Over the years the Mystery Science Theater 3000 team was nominated for many awards. Finally, in 1993 they won a Peabody Award for Outstanding Quality Programming. After their initial year at KTMA, Joel, Trace, Jim, Josh, and Kevin moved their show to what is now known as Comedy Central. They spent a few years there, during which a few changes were made, most notably Mike taking over on the Satellite of Love (the name of the ship) after Joel was finally rocketed back to earth while being forced to watch the movie Mitchell. For some reason, Comedy Central cancelled MST3K at the end of season 7. There was a huge out pouring of support by the shows loyal fans, and lucky for us all Sci*Fi picked it up for the few remaining seasons.
