Crazed Ramblings from My Mind:

What a little bundle of joy.

What's this?

A) A Rorschach inkblot test?
B) An X-ray of an illegal immigrant smuggling drugs across the border?
C) Our baby!

If you guessed C, you win! Your prize is the satisfaction a person feels when they've done their best work, the pride in a job well done, the ability to look back on this day, and forever know that you made the right decision. The--oh, the heck with it! You didn't win anything at all. Man, if all you wanted was a prize you could've just played the lottery, you know.

All kidding aside, the good news is Matt and I really are expecting our first baby in late August. I start my ninth week of pregnancy on January 20th. So far, life and pregnancy hormones have been pretty gentle with me. My mom swears that'll change when I'm in my third month, "Better clean your toilet, 'cause it's gonna be your new best friend." Mom can be so expressive when she wants.

Everyone knows I am not a Bush supporter. The Democratic National Commitee asked normal people, young and old, across the United States to speak their mind on the real state of our union. The stories are poignant, and heartbreaking. As you might expect, these are not people who are better off today than they were when Bush first took office. These are real stories from real people, and every state is represented. I highly suggest you read some of the stories, for they are the voice of the people. Americans are crying out for a change, and I daresay we will have a new President after elections are over.
Quotes!

I'll start with some general quotes by the admirable Thomas Jefferson.
  1. I cannot live without books.
  2. I'm a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.
  3. Never spend your money before you have it.
  4. Never trouble another for what you can do for yourself.
  5. I have the consolation of having added nothing to my private fortune during my public service, and of retiring with hands clean as they are empty.
And end with some religious quotes from Jefferson. Contrary to popular belief, Jefferson, one of the greatest minds who ever lived, was not a Christian. He was very critical of religion in general, and wrote many private letters to his colleagues that questioned religion. The more correct term for his belief system is deism. An interesting article about his thoughts on the subject can be found here, and this is also the site where I found some of the below quotes.
  1. Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity.--Notes on Virginia, 1782.
  2. But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg.--Notes on Virginia, 1782.
  3. Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.--letter to Dr. Thomas Cooper, February 10, 1814.
  4. In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.--letter to Horatio G. Spafford, March 17, 1814.
  5. And the day will come when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the supreme being as his father in the womb of a virgin will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva in the brain of Jupiter. But may we hope that the dawn of reason and freedom of thought in these United States will do away with this artificial scaffolding, and restore to us the primitive and genuine doctrines of this most venerated reformer of human errors.--Letter to John Adams, April 11, 1823.
  6. Christianity is the most perverted system that ever shown on man.

Matt's Rant!

Cancel the WTO, NAFTA, GATT, H1B, L1, and all the other "free trade" laws and treaties. To the American worker, "free" trade means "free to lose your job."

Fact! Opinion! Whatever!

Speaking of people being blessed with babies, here is the heartwarming tale of a couple who just gave birth to sextuplets. As you may have already guessed, the parents took fertility drugs. Now, I have no problem with someone taking fertility drugs to increase their chances of conceiving a child. Personally, I'd go the route of adoption first because their are literally thousands of babies who need a loving home. What I don't understand, is after people make the very hard decision to use fertility drugs, why do they not make the equally hard, but just as important decision to terminate all but one or two of the developing embryos? The technical term for the procedure is an embryo reduction. A woman's body was not made to carry multiple numbers of children. Even twins are ten times more likely to die early in infancy compared to single births. As a general rule, I am not a fan of abortion. I do, however, think that like all medical procedures it has a place. As the number of babies the mother is carrying increases, the risk of death and lifelong complications also increase. I honestly believe that if a person is taking fertility drugs, she and her husband must take a deep breath and do what will ultimately be best for the children. Being born three months early, and only weighing a little over a pound is a hellish start for anyone. I am fully aware that for people having trouble conceiving the sight of those heartbeats on the ultrasound can be the most beautiful artwork of all time. But for the sake of the babies, give them a better chance at life. I know it's hard, but these parents shouldn't let emotions cloud their judgment of what is obviously best for their babies.
