Crazed Ramblings from my Mind:
Cost of the War in Iraq
(JavaScript Error)
Picture this, I had just taken two fairly hard exams for college. I come home, eat a yogurt, take Esther for a walk, sit down
in front of the computer, and type in my favorite website. I read all
the funny comments, check out all the links, smile in a
rather unimpressed manner at the jokes, then reading down farther I see that I am the author of the first soapbox comment! My
eyes widen in surprise to see my words written in pure black and white on my screen. I laugh, I cry, I die...eh, nevermind.
But I am in the DailyDirt! Life is so sweet.
I'm so proud of us. We spent the entire day cleaning the apartment and now it's as clean as if our parents lived here. And you
know how clean most parents keep their homes. Right now, I bet somewhere in America some poor kid is being yelled at for having
a messy room. I feel for you, kid, I really do.
Top Reasons I Support Kucinich
- He promises that cancelling NAFTA
will be his first act as President
- He wants to bring the retirement age back to 65, so our parents and grandparents will no longer need to slave away into
their seventies to support themselves.
- He will implement a program that, over the next ten years, will create a single payer
national health insurance system. Right now, a huge amount of money is wasted on insurance companies, paperwork, and delays.
- He will bring manufacturing back to our communities where it is needed, not sitting back idly and watching it all be
shipped to China, India, and nations with
a lower class of living.
- He is running a grassroots campaign, supported mainly by small donations, and helped by volunteers, instead of taking
money from corporations who have no other interest in the American people except that they are buying their cheap foreign goods.
- He is a strong supporter of the rights of Americans with disabilities.
- He wants to end the drug war, and instead of incarcerating non-violent persons who experiment with drugs (like many High
School and College students), he will help them find treatment for their addiction. He also knows that millions of Americans
believe that medical marijuana relieves suffering, and that people using it should not be harrassed by the United States
Government.
Jokes!
Lem: ''I got fired from my job as a bank guard.''
Clem: ''That's awful. What happened?''
Lem: ''Well a thief came in to rob a bank. I drew my gun. I told him that if he took one more step, I'd let him have it.''
Clem: ''What did thief do then?''
Lem: ''He took one more step so I let him have it. I didn't want that stupid gun anyhow!''
**Groans** Oh that was terrible. Here, I'll try one more time.
A boss tells his new employee, "I'll give you 8 bucks an hour starting today and in three months, I'll raise it to 10 bucks
an hour. So when would you like to start?''
''In 3 months.''
A Stronger Look at Kucinich
I'm sure it's glaringly obvious by now that I fully support Kucinich for the 2004 presidential elections. I mentioned a few
of the reasons in the list above. I'm going to go into a little more detail here, and hopefully some, or even better, most of
you will see my point of view and decide he is the right canidate for you as well.
First, and most importantly of all, he wants to bring jobs back to our communities by cancelling the fiascos
that are NAFTA and
the WTO and recreate manufacturing jobs here. To me, cancelling NAFTA alone is an excellent reason to elect him. In my hometown of
Martinsville/Henry County, Virginia over 9,500 people
have lost their jobs because of NAFTA since 1994.
A second reason I support Kucinich is because he wants to revamp our out-dated, practically useless health care system and
create one that is like the systems seen in Canada and Europe. This would be a one-payer system where patients will have free
choice of what doctors to see, and will not have to rely on insurance companies and HMOs to make their decisions for them.
Thousands of physicians agree with implementing
a single payer system. Think of it this way, for most of us, every month we pay into insurance companies on the chance that
some illness will befall us, or an accident will happen. Yet the chances of something actually happening is pretty slim. I've
always been a very healthy person, aside from an occaisonal sniffle or the foot surgery I had back in 1997. Matt has been even
healthier. What the plan proposes to do is have every corporation pay 7.7% for medical coverage that would, within ten years,
serve everyone in America. This 7.7% is actually less than the 8.5% average that companies already pay for healthcare coverage.
Also, he would continue to use government spending that is already earmarked for healthcare.
He is pro-choice, but will work to make abortions less necessary through education and birth control. Most Americans are pro-choice because they realize that no issue is entirely black or white. Even I, who would never consider an abortion, am pro-choice
for women who are in definate need
of an abortion.
Kucinich is also a self-made man. He is not rich, and was not born into family money like so many other politicians. In fact,
he actually grew up in poverty, along with his six younger brothers and sisters. He has
gotten to where he is today by understanding the needs of the average American worker, and by actually putting them first. Here
are some additional links that I strongly urge you to read. I also ask that you spend the next few months reading all you can
about Kucinich and the other democratic canidates so that you'll be able to make an informed decision come election day in
November 2004.
