Paying homage to the big yaller truck
Crazed Ramblings from my Mind:
I know I haven't updated the MST3K portion of my site in a few days. Sorry about that, but I've been very busy recently. At
the same time that Rachel came for a visit I was also studying for an algebra exam and writing a speech for my Communications
class. She went to class with me and helped with the presentation of the speech. Which, I'm glad to say, I got very good reviews
on. The instructor also said that he thought Rachie did an excellent job handling the projector and showing the class the
photos to go along with the speech, and I have to agree. She then left Sunday and I just took
the exam tuesday. I'm very confident that I did well on it. It seemed pretty easy, which was a relief. I've been given math exams
that have made me want to tuck tail and run, screaming in terror, out the door. I'm also going to be very occupied in the near future. I have a job interview and a field trip today. The
field trip is for extra credit in one of my major classes. I have another speech to write, and have to participate in a bake
sale for the library club I joined. The bake sale was my idea so I guess it's only fair that I contribute also. As usual, I
will be looking through my past issues of Quick Cooking to come up with ideas. God, that magazine is a real life-saver, I'm
telling ya.
I've been brainstorming ideas for my next speech. I have my topics narrowed down to the following: coyotes, essential tremor,
fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, mind control/reading, miming, photography, rocks and minerals, or this website. The
problem I'm facing is trying to narrow those choices down even further by this thursday. Unlike some of my classmates my problem isn't what to do my
speech about, it's picking what to do my speech about.
Something I've just thought of in the last few days is that how I treat Esther and Sammy is a good indication of how I will
treat
our future kids. Having a couple of small, totally dependent animals underfoot is a lot like having a baby. There are a few
exceptions, of course. Sammy and Esther could both walk long before I brought them home, and for the most part they are pretty
self sufficient. If they're hungry they'll eat. If they'll sleepy they'll take a nap. Yet in other ways, they are very much
like little babies. Matt and I have to feed and water them every day. We change their litter, which is about the same thing
as changing a baby's diaper. We spend a lot of time with them just like we would with a kid. Unless it's raining or way to hot
we take them for a leisurely walk around the lake every nite. They get a kitty treat every day just for being so darned cute.
And trust me, the words "Kitty Treat!" are definately in their vocabulary. They also have unique personality traits that I
think help me practice to be a mom. Sammy, for instance, is the more mischevious of the two. She loves to hop on the printer
and bat a little plastic piece because it makes a loud pinging sound. She knows she's not supposed to, and after quite a few
scoldings she now pretty much ignores it. Matt and I can tell she still wants to play with it though, by the way she'll sneak
peeks at it, and look around to see if we're watching. She also sleeps on top of the printer now. I guess her kitty-logic is,
"if you can't play with it, sleep on it." Makes sense, especially if you're a cat. Esther is more like a human baby in the
way she acts. I don't know if it's because she's still a kitten herself, or if that's just her personality. Tuesday, for instance
I came home for break and had only been home long enough to put down my bookbag and turn on the fan in the bedroom. She flopped
down at my feet, rolled over on her back, thrust her paws in the air, and mewed. That's her way of saying, "pick me up, pet me,
tell me a story, throw a ball, DO SOMETHING TO ENTERTAIN ME!!" I lifted her off the ground, and she immediately curled up in
my arms, placed her head on my shoulder and started purring. I started singing very softly, and rocking her back and forth,
more as an automatic response than anything else. She seemed to enjoy it though, which is all the really matters. In fact, she
didn't want to get down. I finally bribed them both with an offer of kitty treats and left them to scamper around in the
kitchen.
Okay, I have the pictures from our trip to Chicago scanned into the computer. I just don't have time right now before I post
the page to get them on here because there are a few more steps I have to go through. I'll be able to get them up later this
afternoon, I hope. I'll be sure to update the changes as soon as I can, too.
To Do!
This time, I'm really taking advantage of the syllabuses every teacher has handed out to me. I'm also writing due dates and
projects down in a calender, which is another first for me. So let's see what all I have coming up in the near future. This
way, if I'm late with an update you'll understand, and have sympathy for me. You might even have a few million dollars for me,
and then I won't have to spend all day at college since I won't need a job, and I'll be free to persue more leisurely tasks
much more than I do now.
- Wednesday, August 27, field trip for extra credit in a child development class.
- Wednesday, August 27, job interview that I would have to either be a complete idiot or just extremely unlucky not to pass.
- Wednesday, September 3rd, donating items for a bake sale that will benefit the college library.
- Wednesday, September 3rd, manning the Fall Fest Table.
- Thursday, September 4th, giving a speech on one of the above topics.
- Thursday, September 11th, I have to present a project about children in a daycare setting.
Gee, I didn't realize how busy my wednesdays and thursdays were until I typed all that. Speaking of which, I need to get started
on that project, it's due in two weeks.
Quotes from One of History's Greatest Men: General Robert E. Lee
- It is well that war is so terrible, or we should grow too fond of it.
- With all my devotion to the Union and the feeling of loyalty and duty of an American citizen, I have not been able to
make up my mind to raise my hand against my relatives, my children, my home. I have therefore resigned my commission in the
Army, and save in defense of my native State, with the sincere hope that my poor services may never be needed, I hope I may
never be called on to draw my sword...
- What a cruel thing is war: to separate and destroy families and friends, and mar the purest joys and happiness God has
granted us in this world; to fill our hearts with hatred instead of love for our neighbors, and to devastate the fair face of
this beautiful world.
- We failed, but in the good providence of God apparent failure often proves a blessing.
- Never do a wrong thing to make a friend or to keep one.
And finally, a quote detailing Lee's life and accomplishments by Benjamin H. Hill, American Statesmen and Senator. Our own
leaders would be doing good to have even half the humility and nobleness of this esteemed man.
- "When the future historian shall come to survey the character of Lee he will find it rising like a huge mountain above
the undulating plane of humanity, and he must lift his eyes high toward heaven to catch its summit. He possessed every virtue
of other great commanders without their vices. He was a foe without hate; a friend without treachery; a soldier without
cruelty; a victor without oppression; and a victim without murmuring. He was a public officer without vices; a private
citizen without wrong; a neighbor without reproach; a Christian without hypocrisy and a man without guile. He was a Caesar
without his ambition; Frederick without his tyranny; Napoleon without his selfishness; and Washington without his reward. He
was obedient to authority as a servant, and royal in authority as a true king. He was gentle as a woman in life; modest and
pure as a virgin in thought; watchful as a Roman vestal in duty; submissive to law as Socrates; and grand in battle as
Achilles."
Fact! Opinion! Whatever!
People can be very stupid. I was walking through Wal*Mart's parking lot on monday to pick up a few groceries when an uglier
than sin, hideous blue car with fast food cups on the roof caught my eye. I looked in as I walked past and noticed a little
girl in there all alone. To make matters even worse, she was in a carseat and the windows were partially cracked. I asked
myself how could parents still be so ignorant as to leave their kids in the summers heat while they dash in the store for "just
a minute." I took note of the row the car was in, walked inside and complained to customer service. The girl at the counter
was as helpful as she could be, and told me that since I didn't get the liscense plate number there was nothing she could do.
I had not bothered writing down the number because I figured they could send a security guard out to check on the vehicle. I
told her that my shopping would only take a few minutes, and that it wasn't really hot outside, and that I would check to see
if the car was still outside when I left.
It took me 15 minutes to grab what I needed and pay. I looked for the car as I walked back out to mine, and thankfully, it
wasn't there. It wasn't until I was halfway home that I realized that the biggest danger that child faced wasn't overheating,
it was abduction. I felt a chill travel down my spine as I thought about her sitting alone in her carseat, at the end of the
parking lot. I mentally berated myself for not going back and getting the liscense plate number after I talked to the
girl in customer service. The child's parents should have been reported to the police. Even though nothing happened to her
this time, she might not be as lucky the fourth or fifth time. Because of this incident I've decided that if I ever see any
child in a similar situation I will report the liscense plate number and vehicle make and model to the closest authority, and
insist they find a way to help. I would hate to ever have a childs abduction on my conscience, especially if I were in the
position to prevent it.
