Crazed Ramblings from my Mind:

Don't I look innocent?

Esther's Story: Wednesday, just out of the blue, I received a paycheck from Sears for time I worked back in February. As I sat on the dining room table going over every minuscule detail, certain there was some mistake and that they had never meant to mail it to me, I felt a pair of little kitten claws tugging on the back of my shirt. “Hi, Esther” I called out and paid no more attention to her.

I started reading over the paycheck very carefully, line by line. Everything seemed in order and I was just about to get up to drive to the bank when suddenly Esther ran up my back—ouch!--and accidentally dug her claws into the back of my neck. My first thought was, “Damn it, I hope I don't have to shower again!” I bent over at the waist so she'd stop clawing her way up. She obviously decided she was comfortable because she plopped her little body down between my shoulder blades, curled up against my neck and went to sleep.

In a quandary, I sat there for a minute or two weighing my options. I could stand, and take the chance of her either falling and getting hurt, or, more likely, grabbing me with her claws again. I could reach behind me and pull her off but as I know from experience pulling a cat off your back isn't always the easiest thing to do. I decided to lie on the floor and take a much needed break. After performing some moves that would make a contortionist jealous, I managed to lie down on my stomach. Esther didn't do so much as budge.

It was there that I decided that maybe Esther, in her infinite kitten wisdom, was trying to tell me that I needed to relax, take a deep breath, and stop running all over the apartment. I can say that a soft, warm, sleeping kitten is one of the most calming creatures mankind has ever imagined. After about five minutes I picked her up and set her on the ground, much calmer, more relaxed, and no longer angry that she'd scratched me.

Does anyone have a subscription to Quick Cooking magazine? I'm proud to say that my comments are featured on page four of the September/October 2003 issue. They're not very enlightening, I'm afraid. If I had known the magazine was going to quote me, I would have said something more profound.

College finally started yesterday. I had a full day of classes, starting at 8 am and ending at 9 pm. Lo-o-o-ong day, lemme tell ya. I'm taking a full-time schedule of classes this semester and hopefully I'll be able to keep up the pace and get my Associate's in two or two and a half years. I have a job substituting for the Child Development Lab when I'm needed, I still volunteer at the humane society, I've joined the Student Library Advisory Commitee (SLAC) and I still plan on finding time to update my site. Whew! Looks like I'm going to be rather busy from now until the end of the semester.

  7. Story Time

Here's a short story I found while playing around on the computer one nite. It's just the perfect length for reading while taking a quick break at work. Hope you enjoy!

    Fact! Opinion! Whatever!

In the next few days, 200 of our service men and women are going to be sent into Liberia on the pretext of keeping the peace. We all know it's pointless, even if peace is resolved fighting will just begin anew as soon as our troops leave. I for one, believe that the tax money the government is going to waste on this feel-good operation could be put to much better usage right here within our own borders. Bush asked for, and recieved, $79.5 billion from Congress to fund the War in Iraq. This year alone the government has already spent over $1.5 trillion of our tax money, much of it going to fund unneccessary wars and tax cuts for the very rich. We Americans could use the money that is being spent so recklessly. Just ask any resident of California, the state deficit is close to $40 billion. Or ask any school teacher in Oregon. The state is so poor that public schools have already ended for the year because the state can't afford to keep them open. Then there are the same old problems, lack of health care, high cost of much needed medicines, homelessness, general unemployment, and unbridled immigration. In spite of all this, our government is sending troops, and therefore our money, into Liberia. What good will it do? For the American people, none at all. I scarcely doubt the Liberians even take notice of our service men and women trying to keep the peace. And the government? They'll be proud of themselves, and somehow find a way to dupe most Americans that this is all for the best.
